TEAM SPIRIT These U.S.-South Korean exercises began in 1969. In 1978, some 100,000 soldiers participated, roughly 30 times as many as in 1971. The maneuvers served as a statement that the U.S. would continue to play a role in case of emergency even after U.S. ground forces withdrew.
