WOMEN'S POLITICAL PARTICIPATION Compared to other advanced countries, Japan has extremely few women parliamentarians. In the 1989 Upper House elections, Takako Doi's popularity and opposition to the consumption tax helped many women to get elected, but this may prove to be an ephemeral phenomenon.
