RED PURGE The red hunts, which emerged amidst the great fear of reds (communists) in the U.S. during the late '40s and early '50s, became a kind of mass hysteria. Senator Joseph McCarthy was the flag bearer of the movement. *Charlie Chaplin, who was a victim of this movement, described red baiters sarcastically in A King in New York. |
