| THE INVASION OF AFGANISTAN USSR military forces intervened to defend the pro-Soviet regime in Kabul. They were defeated by the strong resistance of the anti-government guerrillas, however, and were forced to retreat. This became one of the factors behind the collapse of the USSR. | |
