A tragic mass suicide occurs in Okinawa (1945)

THE STRATEGY OF HONORABLE DEATH Okinawa was the only part of Japan to experience ground fighting in the Pacific War. Some 70,000 Japanese soldiers defended the island against 450,000 U.S. soldiers. Many islanders, who were trapped in the fighting with no place to flee, chose mass suicide as an escape.
